Maui's
prevailing winds, the "Trade" winds blow east-north-east most of the
year, funneling between Maui's two volcanos, creating a venturi effect
that accelerates wind speed considerably.

Kanaha Beach
|

|
Paradise for
novice through expert! With northeast tradewinds hitting side-on-shore,
a long sandy beach, and an easy launch (shorebreak is rare), Kanaha is
a perfect location for lessons. Families will enjoy the open grassy
areas, showers, restroom facilities, and a roped off swimming zone.
Summer is considered slalom season with very flat conditions (by Maui
standards). Spring, winter, fall will find waves on the outside reefs,
but still plenty of space on the inside for beginners. The waves on the
lower reef are long and glassy, gentle yet exciting. The upper reef can
be full of surprises, with pitching ramps and steep wave faces, keeping
even expert sailors alert. This is an excellent reef to sail in the
summer when the swells are wind generated.

Spreckelsville Beach
|

|
Sailing at
Spreckelsville is for intermediate through expert! Sprecks is usually
the windiest area on the North Shore, and fills in the best on easterly
winds. It offers a beautiful, but windy beach. An exposed reef just
upwind of the launch site must be avoided. When the waves pick up in
the fall, you¹ll see plenty of air. Most sailors ride the waves in
the cove just upwind. Outer Sprecks can have the largest waves on the
island with faces over 30 feet. Use caution!

Hookipa Beach
|

|
Where do the
pros love to sail most? Outrageous HOOKIPA! Experts Only! For those
that do not have experience in big waves, the conditions can be
dangerous. The currents and rocky coastline are not very friendly and
the waves break in 2-4 feet of water with a sharp reef on the bottom.
For advanced sailors, the quality of waves and consistency of wind make
Hookipa the world's premiere wave sailing location. From October to
April it is not uncommon to see waves mast high or higher. Remember...
surfers enjoy Hookipa also, and always have "right-of-way".

Kihei
|

|
The windsurfing
in Kihei is mostly flat water sailing with an occasional south swell in
the summer. The side-off-shore winds are generally gusty and can shift
at anytime. NEVER SAIL ALONE! Wind conditions can vary from calm to
choppy to extreme, with winds exceeding 30 knots. The off-shore reefs
are shallow, the conditions can be difficult, and it is best to ask
advice from a local sailor. Be sure to understand the conditions before
going out. Maalaea or "Speed Beach" is off-shore for advanced sailors
only.

Maui Sunset
|

|
The
shoreline in front of the popular condo property (Maui Sunset) offers a
launch through a small channel. The old Hawaiian fishing ponds
located just off shore, create very shallow conditions at low
tide. The beach in this area can be littered with seaweed and
small pieces of coral. This is for advanced sailors only, and be
certain to check the depth of the water.
